Frog in Jar

Brian Stauffer

Illustrator in the hot seat.  Brian is at the top of his game and has been cranking out some seriously solid work.  Check him out in this month’s Communication Arts Issue.  He gives a brief personal account of this experience at his drawger link.  He is also one of the inaugural illustration instructors at an online site offering cool classes, tutormill.

Assignment Seven

I enjoyed seeing what you came up with today working with acrylic. It was nice to hang the paintings and view them as a series.

The wood paneled boxes and the acrylic gave the work a cohesive feel. Each painting unique.

I would like to try it one more time.

Your assignment this week is to know and plan for what you would like to paint on Friday in class ( March 5th). Sketch due by Tues night (March 2nd), mid night. This is your painting- your call on subject matter and content. We will be working on the 12 x 12 paneled boards. This time we will have the entire 5 hours to work on one painting- hopefully hang work at the end of session. The paneled boards (I’m bringing in) will be gessoed and ready to go. We will start at 9:00 am on the painting and you will have the entire class to do your  painting. I’m bringing more palettes, paint and larger brushes.

But if you have paint bring it in.

Bring paper towels.

Bring acrylic paint brushes if you have some. And any acrylic paint you may have- I will have plenty to share.

Bring your approved sketch to work from.

Look forward to seeing your sketch on Tuesday.

Wayne Brezinka

Wayne’s world consists of family, illustration, design and the man simply enjoys the process of creating. He’s in his element when you give him a tight turn around and some conceptual freedom to do his thing.  We are grateful that Wayne is willing to come in and share of his time and talent and give us a tour of his journey.  Wayne has recently had an illustration accepted in the Society of Illustrators show, New York.  Hats off to Mr. Brezinka.  He is a master at both design and illustration and feeds his family with both skill sets.

Waffle House

Illo3 serves it up hot and fresh for assignment five.  Nice to see the class work with the given specs of complimentary colors and large flat planes and come up with some solid images.   Hope to see several of these up on the illustration 3 wall with large prints so we can share the work with others.

Nice job.  I like it.

Line Up for Assignment Six

Assignment six. I’m wanting something for our illo3 wall. make use of that large printer.  I would like our class to create illustrations for a horizontal print of 11 full length portraits on one sheet, a Watkins line up.  Inspired by the great Josh Cochran, we are going to do full length drawings of classmates and colleagues at Watkins.  Pay attention to clothing details and the specifics of what the person is wearing.  This is a link to a example of what I am envisioning, a project Josh completed for the Dubai Metro.   Your drawing will have the person in a standing position and will be silhouetted against a white background.   Sketch deadline: posted by Tuesday, 23rd, 10:00 pm. Final art due on Thursday February 25th, 2010, 10:00 pm, posted.

My recommedation is to take a photo of  your Watkins celebrity to work from and then if time permits to do a life drawing at the same time you take the photo.  Work from both the life drawing and photo reference.  Do not trace the photo.  Simply use it as reference as you work out your drawing, before inking.  Extra credit for any of you that do two or more Watkins celebrities.  Dan in his black hat, full length pose would be a winner. Someone grab a camera.

Give me Five

For week one through five, I’ve asked that each student do one artist review per week.  Most of you posted your reviews on time, some did not.

For the remaining two weeks, I simply want five hot links per week, in one short post,  without review.  Simply list five illustrators/artists that you like. List artist and direct link from name.  When completed it should something like:

Travis’s list of five artist for 02-18-10: Hanoch Piven, Randal Enos, Leo Espinosa, Robert Neubecker, Shout

To view artist work, simply click on name.

Deadline:  post five for 02- 26-10.  And post five for  03-05-10.  Questions?  Let me know.
